You sit down in a room. You close the door. You stay there for a week, trying to think of a 30 second film. Finally you have an idea. It´s brillant! You try to sell your idea to your client. They don´t get it. You go back and write more scripts. They still don´t get it. Weeks later, you get one sold (It´s not half as good as the first one.) You use camera cranes, helicopters and a lot of very large lamps.
Back home, you spend another couple of weeks in post production to make every single frame of the film look really good. Up to that point, the production of the ad had cost about 450.000 euros. Which is only the pocket money. Because now you buy media time on TV to air the commercial nationwide. 30 seconds of air time cost up to 100.000 euros. Advertising is a very strange industry! I work as a creative director for a big ad agency in Germany. I´ve been doing advertising for 12 years now. And I am addicted. Yes, it´s a superficial business full of notorious liars and dazzlers. But hey: Somebody´s gotta do it, right? And without advertising, you wouldn´t have all the TV channels and magazines to choose from!
So welcome to my blog. Where I will tell you storys from the weird world of advertising, a spellbinding universe where you can become famous for an idea you had during lunch break.
